Bread Beckers: Stocking Up on Oats and Beans

Oatmeal may be one of the best foods on earth. If I don’t have oatmeal in the house, it’s like a tragedy has occurred. I mean seriously, oatmeal can be breakfast, lunch, dinner, a bath soak, and is great for the skin. My favorite way to use oatmeal is in my apple and oats breakfast pudding recipe that I get to make on occasion.

So when I ran out of oatmeal recently, it was quite a disturbing situation. Time to stock up!

Some of you may have heard of a little place called Bread Beckers, but some of you may not have. Here’s what Break Beckers looks like:

Bread Beckers

It’s okay, you’re allowed to drool a little….. Yes, those are bulk foods you are looking at, with about half of them being organic. It’s a really cool place, and it makes it easy to stock up on bulk items if you do not have a Whole Foods or Warehouse Club. I think someone has mentioned that the prices overall are cheaper at Whole Foods if your store carries some of these items in bulk. Mine, however, does not, so Bread Beckers it is for me when it comes to oatmeal in particular!

Bulk foods at Bread Beckers

Here’s what I got:

  • 5 gallons Organic Oats
  • 1 new Gamma Lid (green)
  • 5lb organic Black Eyed Peas
  • 5lb organic Kidney Beans
  • 7lb organic Popcorn

I spent a total of $137.80

Organic oats

The organic oats and beans were the best price for me, but I should not have gotten the popcorn because Amazon has a better price on organic popcorn. Ah well – you make a mistake in spending and you just move on and do better next time, right?

Do you have a way that you stock up on your dried food goods? Tell us about it!

  1. I need to go there! I’ve heard so many good things about it- looks like you got some good deals!

  2. Id like to use more beans (but not canned due to BPA) in my cooking- to rehydrate, just soak overnight and use as you would canned beans?

      • I grew up on pinto beans and cornbread. Back in the day you had to “look through the beans” because there were some rocks in the package. I used to hate it, but it brings back fond memories of my precious momma. Canned beans don’t hold a candle to soaked ones; yet I do keep some on hand, just in case I get a hankering for pintos and cornbread RIGHT NOW!!!

  3. We LOVE the Bread Beckers! Did you know you can watch their classes online for FREE? I know churches that don’t even offer their sermons online for free.

  4. Wow!! I have never heard of that place. Very neat. Any idea if after you soak and cook the beans if you can freeze them??

    • Yes, you can certainly freeze them after soaking and cooking! I make a huge batch at one time, then after cooking I just divide into meal size portions and freeze – either in freezer bags or containers.

    • You can also just freeze the beans right after soaking, no need to cook first. Just put them in a ziploc in the freezer and then they’re ready for cooking when you are. I almost always just cook them in my crockpot.

  5. I am very fortunate in that I live 3 miles from Bread Beckers in Woodstock, GA. My daughter has a milling machine, yet she moved to KS almost 4 years ago; and I don’t My daughter bought a milling machine (I think that’s what its called), but she moved to KS 4 years ago. I don’t think there a Bread Beckers close to her.
