Natural and Thrifty in 365: #223 Hire a Birth Doula

A birth doula is a person who attends births as a support for mothers and their families.  The doula provides emotional support and physical comfort measures for the laboring woman.  Numerous clinical studies have shown that the presence of a birth doula tends to result in shorter labors and reduces the need for pitocin, forceps, vacuum extraction and caesareans.

Whether a mother chooses to birth at home or in a hospital, a birth doula can offer a more positive and secure birth experience.  Find out how to hire a doula here.

  1. I wish I had a Doula when I gave birth to my son. So many things I would have done differently.

  2. I hired a Doula for the birth of my second child. I had a really short labor so I wasn’t able to see all the cool things she had to offer, but just having a strong woman by my side, holding my hands through transition, was priceless!! I wouldn’t have another baby without one and I recommend a Doula to every woman. They are amazing, inspiring women who deserve way more credit than they are given. :) I definitely <3 Doulas! ;)

  3. Ditto Laurisa. I loved mine, although she lived an hour and a half away and missed my birth (it was two hours long, but there was ice on the roads!). She was there through a false alarm, and there were things she could do to help with the pain that I had never thought of, and she calmed me in ways I knew my husband couldn’t. I HIGHLY recommend them!

  4. We hired a doula for the birth of our third child. My husband had a hard time comforting me through hard labor. Our doula was amazing stepping in when my husband was at a loss. She was a perfect bridge.

  5. Love my doula! She was also my Bradley birth class teacher. She is very knowledgeable and was there every step of the way!

  6. To me I just don’t get it. I just want my baby to be healthy when they come out. I don’t care how, c-section, natural etc…. I had 2 kids so far without one and do not feel like I am missing out on anything. Though I do like being left alone when I am not comfortable and was dropped off by my mom (who was watching my son) the 2nd time around. I wanted a nap before anyone starting bugging me….lol!
