Natural Products Expo – From GMO-labeling, to the top ten brands and products present at the event

Natural Products Expo – 63,000 attendees and 2,428 exhibiting organic and natural companies; otherwise known as a completely epic event! From the first day, to the last, I was completely floored and overwhelmed by the caliber of people present at the event. While I did deal with the occasional booth worker that knew nothing about the brand he or she was working for, overall the event was absolutely incredible. From meeting THE Bob from Bob’s Red Mill, to David Bronner from Dr. Bronners, it was an experience like none other I have had.

With Bob's Red Mill

There were several instances where I acted like a silly, starstruck school girl in the presence of these amazing people that have helped so many! My ultimate dream is that I can somehow change the World and the lives and health of others, and it was truly an inspiration to meet others who have done just this.

If I could only choose one event to attend next year, it would be the Natural Products Expo. It’s a focused event for the natural and organic community, the education was spectacular, speakers were knowledgeable with so much wisdom to impart, the brands were so open and willing to work and partner with me, and the music and dancing at the closing parties was just the icing on the cake (you all know I love me some dancing!).

“You truly had to be present at this year’s event to experience the energy felt on the show floor and throughout Anaheim,” said Adam Andersen, show director for Natural Products Expo West. “The Grand Plaza at the convention center became the natural products community’s living room for four days, and is where we celebrated the industry’s continued success.”

GMO Panel

Whole Foods Market announced at the event their commitment to have complete transparency by 2018 when it comes to genetically modified organisms (GMOs). I attended a GMO Labeling panel discussion with several industry leaders, including but not limited to David Bronner (Dr. Bronners) and a chairman from Stonyfield.

  • 62 other Nations have mandatory labeling.
  • 85% of corn grown in the U.S. is genetically modified.
  • 92% of Americans support labeling.

The theme of the discussion: The people have a right to know what they are eating. It’s not about what GMOs do, or the health risks involved (although those are bad things), but we need to be a united front and focus on the “right to know.”

Fortunately, because of Whole Foods Market’s announcement at the event, more chains and stores are starting to fall in line and make the same type of commitment. This could be the tipping point in the fight for mandatory labeling of GMOs.

Top 10 favorite products and brands from the Natural Products Expo

While there were so many amazing brands and products at Expo West, I do have a list of top ten favorites.

naturally fresh

10. Naturally Fresh Deodorant.

This is definitely my favorite, natural deodorant. It’s chemical-free, and I use it on a regular basis. While this isn’t a new product that was launching, I felt it deserved a mention because I think the company is just fabulous! The aluminum and other chemicals in todays deodorants are so toxic to the body, and this brand offers a great, natural alternative.

9. Mongo Kiss Lip Balm from Eco Lips.

This product is organic, fair-trade, gmo-free, gluten-free, cruelty-free, and you get .25 ounces of it for just $1.99. That’s a big tube of lip balm for an amazing price. You can buy it at Whole Foods Market or in their online store. I’ve been using this product for over a week, and love it. And with the price being just $1.99 for a lip balm that is double the size of other lip balms, this is a great bargain that also supports a great cause.

Grass Fed Milk from Organic Valley

8. Organic Valley’s Grass-Fed milk.

This new milk is launching soon across the U.S. It tasted very similar to raw milk – and while they still pasteurize it, it’s as close to raw milk as they can get while still adhering to Federal regulations. It’s a great alternative for those that don’t have access to Raw Milk.

The grassmilk has such a great story in terms of when cows eat well, you do, too. That balance of Omega-3s with 6s is so important, as are the CLAs. It’s a nutritional powerhouse.

Rhythm Foods Kale Chips

7. Rhythm Superfoods Kale Chips.

I absolutely loved these organic kale chips, and my favorite flavor was the Mango Habanero.

Rhythm Superfoods’ Kale Chips are light, delicious and one of the fastest ways to get your superfood fix. Their products are also vegan, organic and cholesterol-free, perfect for taking to work or packing in the kids’ lunch boxes.

New Hot Dogs from Organic Valley

6. Organic Valley’s Organic Uncured Beef Hot Dogs.

These dogs were amazing, and a great hot dog for those looking for an organic option. My kids love them some hot dogs, and I just can’t stomach putting “who-knows-what” into their mouths. These beef hot dogs were delicious, AND organic. They launch soon across the U.S.

Hotdogs are often dismissed as unhealthy processed food and something that’s frankly shunned in my household. It’s so great to have an organic and healthy version, no fillers or mystery meats

5. Justin’s new peanut butter cups.

Organic, fair-trade, GMO-free, and Rainforest Alliance certified, and they taste just as good if not better than the “other peanut butter cup.”  This product won the “Best of the West” award for new product launching at Expo West. And the award was well-deserved. Absolutely delicious!

4. Spry gum.

I can’t say enough good things about this product. I use it regularly, because it is one of the few gums that use xylitol instead of an artificial sweetener. I met the guys from the company, and they were Dr. Who fans, too, so you know that puts them in my top 10 list! They also carry toothpastes, mouthwashes and more.

Suja Juice

3. Suja Juice.

Since we all know that I’m a juicing fanatic, this product is pretty much a given. I’ve been on the hunt for a good alternative to recommend to my readers that is raw, organic, non-gmo, and cold-pressed. Suja fits the bill for this perfectly! Plus the people behind the company are genuinely passionate people. It was fabulous meeting them!

Diva Cup

2. The Diva Cup.

Since this cup changed my life years ago, I was so ecstatic to meet these ladies at the Expo. They probably thought that I was a crazy loon with how excited I was when I ran up to their booth. This product is truly amazing, and I believe it can change the life of any woman! Read up more on my experience with the Diva Cup here.

pur03 oils

1. Pure03 Oils.

PurO3 Jojoba is great as a natural skin balancing cream because it’s very similar to the oil our skin produces and when combined with activated oxygen or ozone it acts as a natural purifier for your skin or face which will help eliminate the bad bacterial. The scent of the Jojoba with activated oxygen is amazing and when combined with lavender becomes uplifting. For people looking for an everything clear skin cream PurO3 Jojoba will naturally do the job.

I’ve known about ozonated (activated oxygen) oils for a long time, and was so excited to find a great company that offers this kind of product for a good price. Recently I knew a woman that used ozonated olive oil on a staph infection, and it was healed. The company says that this oil is 99.9% effective against killing e-coli and staph. It’s basically a natural “neosporin”, and my skin has never felt so good since I started using this!

Honorable Mention: The Blender Bottle – SportMixer.

I’ve been a long-time fan of these bottles, and it’s nice to now have a sports version of the bottle. I can blend up smoothies, and my post-work-out drinks right in the bottle – genius!

What do you think about the new announcement from Whole Foods Market and my list of the top ten products from Natural Products Expo? Have you tried any of these products and have feedback? I’d love to know your thoughts!

Note that I did not receive any compensation from any of these companies to recommend them. I did get samples to try the products, and my opinions are my own.

  1. I KNEW Diva Cup was going to be somewhere on the list. For a minute I thought the Suja Juice photos were Diva cups. :)

  2. interesting that you were there and I was there too. I had a ton of requests to meet with brands but couldn’t do them all.
Some of your top 10 products are just updates from things I saw as a kid (and always wondered did they really work — crystal deodorant)
the PurO3 is also a tweak on a long-standing skincare brand out of Europe..

the hot dogs and the peanut butter cups — totally thumbs up.
I am liking all the authentically eco-friendly and really effective cleaning products. I have tried others that were “meh” and just not worth the trouble.

Have you tried EO lip balm? they were there too and they have these flavored balms in round containers and totally cool. their body products rock as well. Worth the look see.
    Great post
