Natural and Thrifty in 365: #133 Reduce Energy Loss From Your Fireplace

Keep your fireplace damper closed when there is no fire burning.  This will keep hot air from escaping.  If you never use your fireplace consider sealing the flue altogether.

  1. My sister in law has hers sealed and has a large piece that holds like 30 tealights in there. She puts the screen in front of it when they are lit. It is so dramatic and beautiful.

  2. We got a special topper put on the top of our fireplace that creates an air tight seal. it really helped cut down on drafts. I think it cost around $100, my husband installed it himself and over the past few years I am sure we have recovered our money as our heating bills have gone down every year.
