Shopping Superstars: NO Spending Spree Week Four

Scroll down and leave a comment or linky to show off all the bargains you got this past week!

It’s the final day and week of our NO Spending Spree, and honestly I’m not sure I’m ready for it to end. We’ve gotten into a good rhythm with meal planning and finding free things to do around town. Since I have done such a good job at stockpiling groceries, I believe we still have enough food to take us into another couple of weeks or even a month.

But since we are going on a road trip next month, continuing this NO Spending Spree would be impossible. However, we are going to keep spending at a minimum, and will be purchasing travel foods and other necessities for our road trip. I’m very excited to blog about our trip, share our fun adventures with you and show you how to take a road trip on a budget.

This past week we reached a debate in our household over birthday money that the kids had received. My husband wanted to let the kids spend it since it wasn’t part of our money, but I thought it wouldn’t be a problem for the kids to wait one more week. Their birthdays were over a month ago, so I didn’t see harm in waiting.

Unfortunately our waiting to spend it was hurting the giver’s feelings, so we took the kids out and used their birthday money. We shopped at Kohl’s with a 30% off coupon and then took the kids for ice cream with the rest of their money (it wasn’t hard to decide to do this with them chanting “ice cream, ice cream” from the back seat of the car).

One of the important things we have talked about with coming off of the NO Spending Spree, is that we don’t want all our efforts to have been pointless. If we go out and spend a lot of money on non-essential things, then this past month will have been for naught.

So we’ve decided that we will eat out once between now and our road trip (to celebrate Father’s Day and my Birthday), and that spending will be limited to groceries, bills and getting what we need for our trip.

I can’t wait to start blogging about our trip, so that you can enjoy the ride with us!

  1. Good job not spending money. We have a problem with eating lunches out, so I’m working on that.

  2. Thanks for sharing. I was wondering what conclusion you guys came to about the kids bday $. Sounds like you figured it out. I enjoy your blog.

  3. birthday money always goes in the bank at our house. I bought my first car with mine and tell the kids that’s what they can do with theirs. They actually get excited to watch their total deposits increase now! If they get a couple bucks for something else or gift cards, they can spend those.
