Natural and Thrifty in 365: #36 Substitute Greek Yogurt for Sour Cream

One of the easiest ways I can turn a recipe or meal around and make it a little healthier is to substitute Greek Yogurt for sour cream. I do this with dips, guacamole, chili, burritos and more.

The nice thing about a plain Greek Yogurt is that it is thick, and tastes slightly sour like sour cream. During the holidays last year, no one could tell that I had used yogurt in my recipes and they raved about how much better the dishes were compared to the previous year. You can learn how to make your own Greek Yogurt at home here.

Do you use Greek Yogurt as a substitute for sour cream? What’s your favorite recipe to use it in?

Tip: Sometimes I will even use Greek Yogurt as a substitute for mayonnaise and cream cheese!

  1. I can’t eat mayonnaise (unless I make it without soybean oil, which is a pain to do) so I often substitute yogurt in things like pasta or potato salad or coleslaw, and nobody ever notices. My picky brother in law even liked my potato salad and was very surprised when my husband told him it was fat free yogurt instead of mayo :-)

  2. love this, i just found a recipe for making homemade yogurt, and this is even one step better. will be using raw milk from a near by farm.

  3. My sister was shocked to find that I had replaced all the mayo and other garbage in deviled eggs for Greek yogurt. I peeled the eggs, threw yolks in a bowl, added enough greek yogurt to get it wet and pasty. I then added 1/2 tsp mayo, 1/4 tsp spicy mustard, a pinch of salt, 1/2 tsp. millk and beat it up. I then stuffed this into the eggs and sprinkled with paprika. She liked it as did I. It was just something I tried and it worked for me.
