Natural and Thrifty in 365: #200 Treat Lice with Coconut Oil

When lice invade your family fight back with a natural, powerful hair treatment that kills the lice and makes the nits (eggs) easier to remove.  Coat the entire head of affected hair in coconut oil.  Cover this with a shower cap and a towel.  Let this sit for as long as possible, preferably overnight.  In the morning, use a lice comb to go through each section of hair being careful to remove the nits.  Wash with regular shampoo and rinse with vinegar to help remove the oil.  You may have to wash and rinse again to completely remove the coconut oil.  Repeat every 3-4 days for 2 weeks to kill any lice that may have hatched.

This method worked very well in our home.  What natural ways have you treated lice?

  1. I wish I’d of known about this!!!! Hopefully we will never need it again, but just in case…

  2. It works! Rinse with vinegar too to make double sure. We spent over a year dealing with this problem because every time my stepkids came back from their mom’s they had it!! Every other Friday I had to go through their hair and treat it. The coconut oil didn’t damage their hair so much and smelled so much better! (it took 2 SRS visits and us filing for custody- and getting it!- for her to put the bottle down and clean up her act!

  3. There’s a local school that needs to read this from what I hear….just sayin’

  4. I worked in a pediatric Dr office and we used to have people use mayonaise overnight with a shower cap. Pregnant woman and children under 2 can’t use the chemical lice killers. It has to be real mayo and not miracle whip or similar.

  5. I recently had to do a continuing education on lice (I’m a CPhT). Turns out chemical lice treatments are getting less effective each year ( micro-evolution in the works!) One study showed that using Cetaphil lotion worked better than chemical treatments. Same basic concept as the coconut oil, it coats the lice and inhibits their breathing and they thus suffocate. I’d be curious to know which method is cheaper though…

  6. Im so glad I found this! I have been dealing with this for over 6 months! I’m going to try this now on all of us just to be sure we get it all!

  7. I use a mixture of coconut oil and tea tree oil. I find it more effective with the tea tree oil.

  8. i have coconut oil sitting in my pantry. and will be using this tonight. so much thick dry hair in my house. those critters abolutely love my daughter. i cant wait, i hope it works!!!!!! i put tea tree oil in daily for the last week also, and have done cetephil hoping this is a pleasant experience!!!!!!!
