Health Benefits of Vitamin D

The list of ways in which Vitamin D benefits our health is a nice long one. Doctors and researchers are still discovering the intricate ways that it works within our body and affects our overall health. Here are a couple ways in which Vitamin D benefits us:

Healthy Bones: We need calcium and phosphorus for maintaining healthy bones, and you NEED Vitamin D to absorb these minerals. Even if the foods you eat are high in calcium or phosphorus, without a healthy amount of Vitamin D, you won’t absorb them into your body and reap their benefits.

Healthy Immune System: What some of the latest research has uncovered is how essential Vitamin D is to maintain a healthy functioning of the immune system, helping protect us from infections, diseases, as well as many types of cancers.

Healthy Heart & Circulation: What we now know is that heart disease, our #1 cause of death, is directly related to and influenced by Vitamin D. Just like every other muscle in our body, the heart is affected by a lack of the muscle-building properties of Vitamin D.

Diabetes & Blood Sugar Control: Unfortunately, a huge percentage of our population is affected by diabetes. It is also the 6th leading cause of death. There does, however, seem to be a correlation between people who live in sunny climates having a lower risk of diabetes. This is another reason why it is important to get a healthy supply of Vitamin D through food and supplements during the winter months.

Preventing Cancer: This is a big one. There has been some recent studies that suggests that the risk of developing certain types of cancers is lower for people with healthy levels of Vitamin D in their systems. Breast cancer is even being described by some as “vitamin D deficiency syndrome”.

Are you getting enough Vitamin D? What will you be doing to ensure that you get enough Vitamin D during the Winter months?

Its a pretty fantastic vitamin. Shocking to see how much it really boosts one’s system when suffering from certain illnesses (such as cancer).
